Annual Statistics

The Department of Criminal Justice Services designates the following race groups for Unified Crime Reporting:

  • White: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East.
  • Black: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.
  • Asian or Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, or Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Samoa.
  • Unknown is used when a person is unwilling to disclose their race.

Per the Department of Criminal Justice:  “Hispanic” is not defined as a race. Persons of Hispanic heritage are members of the ethnic groups based in the Spanish-speaking regions of Central America, South America, the Caribbean Ocean, and Europe. Hispanic people may consider themselves both Black and Hispanic, for example. Phrases like “Black Hispanic” or “White Hispanic” describe a person by both race and ethnicity. In the event an arrestee is not forthcoming regarding their ethnic origin, arresting authorities may rely on officer observation to determine the ethnicity of the offender.
