Village News
In Memoriam: Goldie

Robert "Goldie" Goldstein was a devoted volunteer for the Tarrytown Fire Department for more than 55 years. Nine times serving as Captain of the Consolidated Engine 77 Company, he was dedicated to serving the people of Tarrytown. Many Tarrytown residents also knew him as a coach and referee for multiple youth sports including baseball, basketball and football. Trustee Hoyt, a longtime friend, says of Goldie, "He was a gentleman, he was a great firefighter, and he will be greatly missed." In remembering Goldie at the March 7 Board of Trustees meeting, Deputy Mayor McGovern said, "He was a very well-loved member of the community...and just an all-around great guy. We will really miss him, but we are very grateful that we had him with us as long as we did." More information about services can be found here.

Paving on Rt. 9

At last, the NYS Department of Transportation project to repave Rt. 9 from Lakeview Drive (south of I-287) to the Clocktower at Beekman Avenue is set to begin this month.

The crews will begin staging along Route 9 the week of March 21 and March 28. The week of April 4th they will be replacing ADA ramps along the route, which will cause minor disruption in certain areas. The milling and paving project should begin mid-April. The project is expected to last until July.

All work will be taking place at night between 8pm and 6am. This allows the project to move more quickly which is important along this busy thoroughfare.

This critical project will cause nighttime noise, dust, and disruption, but will move consistently, so no single location should be impacted for a significant length of time. Parking will be prohibited in the areas under construction. Rt. 9 will be reduced to a single lane where the crews are working. When feeling frustrated by the temporary inconvenience, please remember the current condition of the roadway and how necessary this brief disruption is to the long term state of this important corridor through Tarrytown.
Con Ed Update

Con Ed is continuing restoration work on the twelve locations that have been undergoing replacement work this winter. Final paving and restoration on these sites should be completed by mid-April. As the paving work takes place, please look out for the No Parking signs that will be posted as the work progresses.

Con Ed's subcontractor, Hawkeye, has begun work on Wildey, North Washington and Valley. The work will progress on Wildey toward Broadway with expected completion in that area of the Village in June.
Con Ed Installing Natural Gas Detectors in Tarrytown

Con Ed is installing natural gas detectors in residences. This is a free device that monitors the air in the area where gas service pipe enters your home or building, and will sound an audible alarm and send Con Ed an alert if a potential gas leak is detected. They will be working on the project in Westchester through 2022.

You may have received a letter notifying you that Con Ed wishes to make an appointment to install the gas detector. If you would like to be proactive in scheduling the appointment, you can call Southern Cross, the subcontractor Con Ed has designated for the installation. Their number is 866-483-2341.

You can also go online to Con Ed’s website and they have an online appointment tool.

The natural gas detector will typically be installed in the area where the gas service pipe or other utilities enter your home or building. The installation should take less than an hour and there is no need to turn off your gas service. Make sure there are no obstructions to the gas meter to reduce installation time.

Sidewalk Project on Washington, Wildey, Franklin and Wood Ct.

The Village will be replacing sidewalks and trees on Washington, Wildey, Franklin, and Wood Court, and the project is likely to begin this summer. If you are a resident or business owner who would like to get updates on the project as it moves forward, or have specific questions you hope to get answered, please fill out this contact form.
Please do not feed the wildlife!

Please do not feed the wildlife in our parks and public spaces. Our Parks Department works very hard to keep our public spaces in good condition for public enjoyment. Please do not undermine their efforts by encouraging wildlife to settle in for a snack. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has good information about why feeding waterfowl and other wildlife is harmful to their health.
Daylight Savings begins Sunday, March 13

Don't forget to turn your clocks forward by one hour before you go to sleep on Saturday!
Board of Trustees in Brief
Report From Board of Trustees Meetings 2.22.22 and 3.7.22
ICYMI, you can watch Village Board meetings online.

  • Dan Welsh, the Director of the Westchester Power Program at Sustainable Westchester, gave a presentation to the Board about the program's progress and upcoming contract renewal efforts. The presentation can be found here.
  • As a reminder to residents, Westchester Power is a community-based bulk energy purchasing program that serves as an alternative energy supply choice in place of other ESCOs and Con Ed. Con Ed continues to distribute energy supply to Tarrytown residents, but since the 1990s, New York energy customers have had the ability to choose the company that provides their energy supply. For more on the Power to Choose initiative, click here. Westchester Power is an opt-out program, which means that residents are automatically enrolled in the 100% renewable energy supply option unless they choose to opt out. Opting out is easy to do by visiting the Westchester Power website or calling (914) 242-4725. The fixed rate provided by Westchester Power allows residents to avoid extreme fluctuations in energy markets. Sometimes the program's prices are higher than Con Ed's and sometimes they are lower, but the average customer has paid less than they would have paid Con Ed for supply over the course of the previous 14 months. Tarrytown has been enrolled in the program since its inception in 2018. For more, visit the Village website.

  • Sidewalk Cafe permits have become annual. COVID-19 helped teach us that outdoor dining can happen year-round with a little ingenuity. The Board voted on a permit duration of April 1 - March 31. Support our local businesses and a vibrant downtown all year!

  • Downtown Outdoor Dining is Back! In 2022, Tarrytown will be closing streets for outdoor dining on Saturdays in June, July and September. The Village will also host the annual street fair on the first Sunday in June and the Winter Stroll on the first Saturday in December.

  • The Board approved an access agreement for a solar developer to explore the potential installation of solar panels on commuter parking lots around the train station. The initiative is part of a County-wide effort to identify solar farm opportunities on under-utilized spaces. The access agreement is for investigation purposes and does not commit the Village to future solar development.

  • The Board approved the issuance of bonds for the 2022-2023 budget cycle. The full text of the bonds is included in the meeting agenda, and will be included in the minutes.
