National Boat Safety WeekNational Boat Safety Week May 22-May 28 (And Activities)

During COVID times, communities across the country, including here in Westchester, saw exploding interest in various outdoor recreation activities… Tennis, Golf and Boating! Well National Boat Safety Week is here and there are some activities planned in the area:

Free safety inspections by the USCGAUX Auxiliary Tarrytown Flotilla and NY State inspections by the Harbormaster - Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm May 22/23 and May 29/30. Literature and safety gear will be distributed to the public consisting of whistles and kayak paddle reflectors.

The public may also sign up for the June 19th boating course taught in person by USCGAUX and NYS instructors from 8:30am to 4:30pm at Washington Irving Boat Club. The cost is $60.00 and upon completion of the course, a certificate that meets NYS requirements to operate a power driven vessel will be issued (basically a boaters license). If you were not already aware, all boat motor operators will need a license by 2025. Currently anyone born after January 1, 1993 is required to have a license. The Course is available to anyone aged 10 years and higher (no that is not a typo, age 10+).

COVID requirements are: completed vaccination (2nd shot) or a negative test 72 or less hours prior to the course. CDC card for shot proof or signed doctor or lab reviews of Neg test. Sign up for the course can be with Kevin Lustyik at 914 400 9319 or Robert Delia at 201 715 7801.

parking permitsParking Permits On-Sale / Renewal Time

Is your office re-opening? Are you looking to commute back to NYC several days a week? Well parking permits are available for the 2021-2022 parking season. Now you wonder, is it really time to get a permit? Here’s the (resident) calculation you might need… Consider this - if you park and pay the meter just once a week for the entire year, it could cost you $700+ or more. A Village of Tarrytown annual resident permit costs $450 a year.

We are happy to introduce a new parking permit option for residents of the center Village downtown business district. This permit allows residents to park in several of the downtown parking lots without feeding the meter. This permit is only eligible for the downtown lots. If a downtown resident wants to be able to park downtown AND at the train station, you still must purchase a resident commuter parking permit.

All parking permits are due for renewal at this time (except for on-street permits and recreation permits which run on a calendar year) so please, do not delay and renew today!

Permit applications (fees for permits are on the application) can be found here: https://www.tarrytowngov.com/village-parking/pages/parking-permit-applications

Board of Trustees Round-Up

  • This Monday the Board voted to update the law prohibiting smoking and vaping ANY substance in our Tarrytown parks – therefore tobacco, cannabis/marijuana, and any other substances may not be smoked in any Village park.
  • The Village approved 12 street closures for outdoor dining on Tarrytown’s Main Street Starting June 19th; the Village is also investigating the prospect of dining in parking spaces.
  • Two separate compatible use Permits were referred to the Planning Board for review. The 39-51 North Broadway project (downsized from 80 to 47 units) was also updated and referred again to the Planning Board. We remind you to keep apprised of planning board agendas and encourage the public to comment on all applications of interest (subscribe for updates here).
  • Lastly, we recognized National Police week and thanked our local officers for a job well done, their professionalism, and their service to our community.

Be a Good Swimming Pool Neighbor!

Under certain conditions, draining swimming pool water directly to grade or streets leading to storm drain can cause fish kills and other harmful environmental impacts.

Failure to follow appropriate procedures and to implement appropriate testing and other safeguards may constitute discharge of pollutants that could result in fish kills and other types of damage, and may cause the discharger to be subject to fines for non-compliance with Title 10 NYCRR Part 6-1.13 and local law § 265-6.

Before you consider draining your pool water, contact the Department of Public Works at (914) 631-0356.

Tree Giveaway…. The Tree Commission will be giving away trees in early June – stay tuned for more details…

The Pool is almost ready to open May 29th. The Splash Pad should be open in the next several days (there is a minor repair holding us up – we appreciate your patience).

5/24 Update Regarding Splash Pad: Last week in our “link” (newsletter) we noted that the splash pad should be up and running within a few days… Unfortunately, it turns out what we thought was only a minor electrical fix is actually a problem with the control unit. This repair is going to take longer to complete as we source a new unit. We are working diligently to complete this repair and will provide an additional update when we have one.
