The Village of Tarrytown is honored to host the 150th Annual Firefighters Association of the State of New York Convention, bringing 45 fire departments from across the state to our Village for four days of activities. The festivities will culminate in a dress parade to be held on Saturday, August 13 from 3 to 5pm. Come down to Main Street and Broadway to celebrate our local fire department and their statewide compatriots. The parade route will run from 303 South Broadway to Main Street, and down to the waterfront at Losee field.

Fire Departments  from Westchester, the Hudson Valley and as far as Niagara County and Long Island will join FASNY leadership to recognize the esteemed history of the Association and the incredible legacy of the entire volunteer fire service.

Vintage fire trucks will be showcased and the parade will honor honor FASNY Past President Gunnar Neilson, a Past Chief of the Ossining Fire Department, as the Grand Marshal.

Please be aware that the celebration will mean Broadway/Rt.9 and Main Street will be closed from 2pm to 6pm on August 13. Please make alternative transportation arrangements to avoid Broadway/Rt. 9 that afternoon. The H-Bridge will also be closed to vehicular traffic from 3 to 5pm.

Did You Know...

The all-volunteer Tarrytown Fire Department has provided residents of the Village of Tarrytown with fire  protection for over 150 years. The companies operate out of five fire stations with over 200 volunteers.

There are six volunteer fire companies:

  • Conqueror Hook & Ladder, Ladder 37, located at Main street
  • Phenix Hose, Engine 76, located on Central avenue
  • Consolidated Engine, Engine 77 located on Sheldon Avenue
  • Washington Engine, Tower Ladder 78 located on Rt. 119
  • Hope Hose, Engine 79 located at Main Street
  • Riverside Hose, Engine 80 located at the bottom of Franklin Street

The Department covers a large area, well beyond the Village, including the New York State Thruway from the Yonkers toll booth to the opposite side of the Mario Cuomo (Tappan Zee) bridge; the Hudson River; and the Glenville Fire District. Tarrytown is one of only a few that still have a fire boats in the water. The Fire Department also provides help to the surrounding departments and within the county of Westchester.

Climate-adaptive Design Studio

The Village is pleased to announce its selection as the host community for the fall 2022 Climate-adaptive Design Studio. The Climate-adaptive Design (CaD) Studio is a semester-long course created by the Cornell Department of Landscape Architecture that links students with Hudson riverfront communities to explore design alternatives for more climate resilient and connected waterfront areas. Offered in collaboration with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program, the fall CaD studio will feature the work of third-year graduate students and will take place from September through December of 2022.

The Village of Tarrytown was selected to host the 2022 CaD studio through an application process that was open to all Hudson River Estuary waterfront communities. Letters of interest were solicited during the spring, and Tarrytown was chosen as the host site after a thorough review of seven applicant communities.

Mayor Karen Brown says of Tarrytown’s selection, “This is an honor and a big win for the Village of Tarrytown. It coincides with the heightened interest in our waterfront and will set the bar for sustainability and climate-resilience measures in future projects.”

The CaD studio assists municipalities in evaluating their waterfront and developing a vision for integration of diverse uses in ways that are visually appealing, highly functional, and resilient to flooding and other climate-related risks. During and after the CaD studio, communities examine options, including nature-based solutions for stormwater and shoreline management, engineered shoreline reinforcements, adaptation of infrastructure at risk of flooding and inundation, and strategic retreat from highly vulnerable areas. The CaD studio emphasizes design principles that embrace water-dependent and water-enhanced uses, utilize nature-based solutions, and anticipate changing conditions over time.

The Tarrytown CaD studio will feature three visits by student designers, which will include meetings with community stakeholders. The first community meeting will take place in September, a design workshop will take place in October and the final open house to share the resulting designs will take place in December.

Individuals with an interest learning about opportunities to participate in the Tarrytown studio can contact CaD team member Liz LoGiudice at liz.loguidice@gmail.com  and can also refer to the webpage dedicated to the project on the Village website for updates: https://www.tarrytownny.gov/village-trustees/pages/climate-adaptive-design-studio-cad.

Designs from past CaD studios can be found at https://trophic.design/cad/.  For more information about the CaD studio, visit tinyurl.com/CornellCaD

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

988—the new universal three-digit dialing code for suicide prevention and SAMSHA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) administers the new “988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline,” which replaces the current toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).

Importantly, the pre-existing 10-digit number will remain active and will connect callers to the new 988 Lifeline. The 988 Lifeline is designed to become a simple alternative to both 911 and the existing 1-800 number. Calling 988 will direct the caller to representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. This new, simplified tool is critical for older adults and those living with a disability.
