Tarrytown Board of Trustees Letter Regarding Killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis

The Village Board of Trustees and I wish to express our profound regret and sadness over the killing of George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis police.

Personally, and collectively, we wish to send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd, and we also want to make it absolutely clear that we are revolted by and condemn the racist and inhuman acts by the police that resulted in his death.

We further want to emphasize that the Tarrytown Police Department also unequivocally rejects any and all police behavior that is grounded in the racism that has plagued our country for far too long.  We are confident that our police officers have, and will continue to be fair, respectful and professional in doing their jobs protecting every member of our community.  Nothing else has been, nor will be, acceptable.

Perhaps the most important lesson we have learned in the pandemic is that it is only by supporting and respecting one another can we make progress against what otherwise would be overwhelming challenges.  It is crucial that as we move forward to restore our public health and our economy, and that we also find the strength to confront the racial disparities in our society.  If we do not, it is our belief that the restoration will be far from complete.

Be well and stay safe,
